Middletown drops four-set South match to Roseland University Prep

LAKEPORT >> Freshman Cassidy Hanson turned in another big night on the volleyball court for the North Central League I-North leading Kelseyville Knights on Thursday during a 25-16, 25-10, 25-15 varsity win over the Clear Lake Cardinals in Lakeport.

Hanson led the Knights (6-0 league, 18-4 overall) with 10 kills and seven aces. Her older sister, Riley, finished with a team-best 12 assists while Olivia Bushey added seven digs and one block.

“The girls played well and really worked together tonight,” Kelseyville head coach Donelle McCallister said. “Setters Riley (Hanson) and Brooklyn (Young) engaged all hitters. Big props for Lilly Halmel, who had three kills on six arm swings with no errors.”

McCallister also cited the contributions of libero Grace Peterson.

“She made some fantastic diving digs to extend the rally,” McCallister said.

Kelseyville’s junior varsity team also improved to 6-0 in the league standings with a 26-24, 25-10 win over Clar Lake.

“We had a great match with a much-improved Clear Lake JV squad,” Kelseyville head coach Maille McCallister said.

Kelseyville leaders were Olivia Arredondo with four kills, Mali Rico with four assists, Gabby Keyes with 10 digs, and Allyson Leary with four aces.

Kelseyville’s teams return home Tuesday to play Lower Lake while Clear Lake hosts Willits. JV matches at both locations begin at 5 p.m.

In other NCL I action Thursday:

Upper Lake def. Willits

At Willits, Upper Lake (4-2) rolled past the Willits Wolverines (0-6) in NCL I North play, the Cougars posting a 25-6, 25-18, 25-14 victory.

“Everyone got some playing time tonight and they did well,” Upper Lake head coach Fawn Rave said. “We had some good swings and serving tonight.”

Alyssa John, a senior, led the way with 17 assists, six kills, three digs and one ace. Jordyn Parker finished eight service points, five kills, three digs and two assists, freshman Marina Quiett added five kills, three aces and two digs, and Rilee Sperber had nine service points and one kill. Other team leaders were Riley Jones with seven service points and three aces, Aubree Sperber with three kills and two digs, and Abigail Suzor with three kills.

Upper Lake’s JVs improved to 5-1 in the North standings with a 25-13, 25-8 win over Willits behind seven service points, four aces and one kill from Taylin Sharp, and seven points, two aces and one kill from Mariah Hoaglen.

“Everyone played and worked well together,” Upper Lake head coach Raelene Cromwell said.

Upper Lake’s teams are on the road Tuesday to play Fort Bragg. JV action starts at 5 p.m.

RUP def. Middletown

At Middletown, Roseland University Prep avenged a five-set loss to Middletown on Sept. 22 in Santa Rosa with a 13-25, 25-19, 25-21, 26-24 victory over the Mustangs in NCL I South action.

“It was another battle for us tonight,” Middletown head coach Erika Galvan said. “Roseland is a strong defensive team, and they dug up everything we threw at them. We had some very long rallies where both sides were being pushed to their limits.”

Middletown (3-3) received a huge effort from sophomore Emma Davis with 14 kills, 29 digs, nine service points and one ace. Senior libero Jordyn Harbison led the team with 41 digs.

“Jordyn Harbison had a great defensive game,” Galvan said.

Other Middletown leaders were Bridget Lisenbee with 17 assists, 11 service points, eight digs and five aces, Trinity Galvan with 21 digs, 17 assists, 11 service points and one kill, Izzi Hoogendoorn with 10 kills and one block, Brenna Goodloe with four kills and three blocks, and Grace Williams with seven kills and five service points.

Roseland University Prep won the JV match 27-25, 25-22.

“These girls played the best they have played this season,” Galvan said. “Things are clicking for them, and we are so close to a win.”

Cassidy Duval’s passing kept the Mustangs close the entire way. She finished with eight digs, five service points and four kills.

“She gave so much hustle on the court,” Galvan said.

Rylee Gabbert finished with five kills while Lily Reyes added seven digs, six kills, one block and one ace.

“Rylee Gabbert had some incredible attacks tonight,” Galvan said.

Janel Wilkinson also turned in a solid performance for the Mustangs with 12 assists, seven digs and two aces.

Middletown’s teams are on the road Tuesday to play Sonoma Academy in Santa Rosa. JV action begins at 5 p.m.
