KELSEYVILLE >> Jair Inostroza Carrillo scored in the 17th minute to give the Kelseyville Knights an early lead as they battled the North Central League I-leading Fort Bragg Timberwolves to a 1-1 draw in boys soccer action Thursday in Kelseyville.
Fort Bragg (6-1-1 league, 11-4-2 overall) answered in the 35th minute to pull even against the Knights (4-3-2, 7-6-3).
“That was Kelseyville soccer tonight!” Kelseyville head coach Kc White said. “We have the utmost respect for Fort Bragg. They play hard and they play the right way, and we always have great games with them. Tonight was no exception.”
Anthony Arias assisted on Inostroza Carrillo’s goal as the Knights remained on the fringe of the league race.
“Fort Bragg is in first place, but my team, in my biased opinion of course, was the better team tonight,” White said. “We took it to them, we outshot them by a lot, and we had the better chances.”
Arias had a free kick near midfield early in the first half when he found Inostroza Carrillo, who controlled the ball and volleyed it past the Fort Bragg keeper.
“Fort Bragg answered in the 35th minute, I just tip my hat on that one,” White said.
Kelseyville had a chance to take the lead early in the second half but missed a penalty kick wide right.
“We created more chances after that and absorbed Fort Bragg’s best and ended level,” White said. “Really, it was a spectacular game from both teams, our best game of the season.”
Fort Bragg won the first league meeting 3-1 on Sept. 15 in Fort Bragg.
White praised the leadership of team captains Inostroza Carrillo, Gerardo Garcia, Angel Bernal and Julio Lopez for help turning the tide after the Knights fell 2-0 to archrival Clear Lake on Tuesday in Lakeport, a game White said was one of the worst performances by the Knights during his coaching tenue.
“Anthony Arias may have been affected the most by the extra push and challenge set by my captains,” White said. “That was easily Anthony’s best game of his freshman season. He owned the center-mid position tonight and looking much older than a freshman. He really benefitted from a formation change.”
Kelseyville hosts Upper Lake on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

Clear Lake head coach Anthony Duncan said Carmona was the player of the game.

Nolan Buffalo had seven saves in the shutout, and the Cardinals finished with 18 team steals.
“The pressure on the ball and defense was solid,” Duncan said. “The passing seemed to connect every time.”
