Lady Cards blank Knights, Mustangs win 2-1

County girls soccer teams open 2026 schedule

KELSEYVILLE >> Selena Carbajal and Jeanette Luevano, both freshmen, scored first-half goals as the Clear Lake Cardinals shut out defending North Central League I champion 2-0 in the girls soccer season opener for both teams Tuesday afternoon in Kelseyville.

“Our offense and defense both played a great game,” Clear Lake head coach Gustavo Carbajal said. “Goalie Amelie Davis had amazing stops.”

Carbajal scored the Cardinals’ first goal of the season. Luevano followed up with a goal of her own to give Clear Lake a 2-0 halftime lead.

“I was very proud of their effort and performance,” Kelseyville head coach Irma Rodriguez said of Kelseyville’s first effort in 2026. “We started slowly in the first half, and a few mistakes and defensive breakdowns allowed Clear Lake to score twice.”

Rodriguez said her team’s effort in the second half was much improved.

“Our defense and midfield limited Clear Lake’s chances and reduced their shots on goal. We also created several quality scoring opportunities but were unable to finish,” Rodriguez said. “The key takeaway is we generated those chances, and the goals will come with continued development.”

Added Rodriguez, “Our focus this season is continued growth, improving communication, supporting one another, and becoming a stronger team. We have a lot of work ahead, but I believe in this group and am excited to see their progress.”

Clear Lake (1-0) returns home Thursday to play Middletown (1-0) at 6:15 p.m. Kelseyville (0-1) hosts Upper Lake (0-1) Thursday.

Middletown 2, Upper Lake 1

At Middletown, Ally Cherry scored goals in each half to help lift the Middletown Mustangs to a season-opening win over the Upper Lake Cougars, who scored on a second-half penalty kick by Alexis Robbins.

Middletown (1-0) led 1-0 at halftime.

“Her second goal was a beautiful left-footed shot from outside the goal box,” Middletown first-year coach Cassi Clark said of Cherry.

Clark also praised the strong play of senior captain and midfielder Thaly Rodriguez Meza, senior center midfielder Kenya Andrade-Garcia and sophomore sweeper Charlize Hill.

Upper Lake keepers Charlie Robbins (first half), Rylee Zimmerschied (second half) and Grace Abreu (second hal) combined to block 22 shots. Maci Jones had a long drive down the field and was fouled in the penalty box to set up Robbins’ penalty kick.

“Lots of heart and hustle while we still work on our conditioning and ball control,” Upper Lake first-year coach Jim Keck said. “Our defensive back line set up 10 offside traps.”

Added Keck of his team’s season-opening performance, “We had some really good transitions, especially down the right side. Th girls have a great positive attitude and support each other.”

Middletown returns to action Thursday against Clear Lake in Lakeport. Upper Lake (0-1) is on the road Thursday to play Kelseyville (0-1).
