Cardinals knock off Mustangs 4-2 in girls soccer action

FORT BRAGG >> Goals by Loreno Inong and Juliza Sevilla lifted the Lower Lake Trojans, undefeated in the North Central League I standings, to a 2-1 road victory over the Fort Bragg Timberwolves on Thursday in Fort Bragg.
Valerie Calderon and Zully Esquivel picked up assists for the Trojans, now 5-0 in league play and 9-3-1 overall.
“Fort Bragg scored right away, and we had a slow start,” Lower Lake assistant coach Anna Brin said. “A few of our girls were struggling with injuries, but we were able to push through and come out on top.”
Lower Lake hosts Clear Lake (3-2) on Tuesday at 6:15 p.m.
In other league action Thursday:
Kelseyville 7, Cloverdale 1
At Kelseyville, behind five goals from Mikaela Rico, the Kelseyville Knights (5-0, 11-1-1) kept pace with Lower Lake atop the NCL I standings with a victory over the Cloverdale Eagles.
Rico scored twice in the first half as the Knights established a 3-0 lead. She added three more goals in the second half. Kylee Denham and Melanie Jimenez also scored goals for the Knights while Ximena Herren and Hiliana Rico had assists.
“Cloverdale played a good game and was able to send several dangerous balls through our defense,” Kelseyville head coach Irma Rodriguez said. “But the Lady Knights worked hard to stop the runs. Ximena Herren did a great job on defense tonight, working hard to shut down attacks and helping keep Cloverdale from creating scoring opportunities.”
Added Rodriguez, “Grace Hobbs made some great saves in the first half while Andrea Jimenez came up with several strong stops in the second half.”
The Knights hit the road Tuesday to play Middletown at 6:15 p.m.
Clear Lake 4, Middletown 2
At Lakeport, Jeanette Luevano and Hailey Perez scored two goals apiece as the Clear Lake Cardinals (3-2, 10-2-1) won their fourth straight, beating the Middletown Mustangs (2-3, 6-7).
Ally Cherry and Trinity Wood scored for Middletown, which trailed 3-2 at halftime.
Sellena Carbajal and Haylie Garcia had assists for Clear Lake.
“Our team did amazing,” Clear Lake coach Gustavo Carbajal said. “They played hard all 80 minutes.”
“The ladies battled a great game considered we started down three starters and lost two more around the half,” Middletown head coach Cassi Clark said.
Middletown freshman keeper Rylie Slaight had 20 saves. Another freshman, Serenity O’Brien, “played a phenomenal game, newly back from a summer-long injury, playing defensive center after starter Casi Padilla came out on an injury,” according to Clark.
Added Clark, “I’m very proud of these lady Mustangs tonight.”
Clear Lake travels to Lower Lake on Tuesday at 6:15 p.m. while Middletown hosts Kelseyville at 6:15 p.m.
Willits 2, Upper Lake 0
At Willits, the Willits Wolverines shut out the Upper Lake Cougars, who dropped their third straight.
Upper Lake is 1-4 in league play and 1-9 overall.
The Cougars resume their league schedule Tuesday at home against Cloverdale at 4:30 p.m.
