CHICO >> Two days before Easter, the Middletown High School varsity girls track team scored the golden egg Friday afternoon by topping a 20-team field at the NorCal Small Schools Invitational at Chico High School.
“Not everyone from my team attended the meet today, but those who did performed well,” Middletown head coach Wyatt Hall said. “This was our last meet before we have spring break. I wanted to go into break on a high note and we did.”
Clear Lake High School also had athletes entered in the meet.
Top-three finishers in all events received medals.
Varsity girls
Isa Barnes, Krystal Ocken and Cat Barriga placed high for the team-champion Mustangs in the varsity girls division.
Barnes finished second in the 100-meter hurdles (17.39 seconds), fourth in the long jump (14 feet, 4 inches) and fifth in the 300 hurdles (51.64). Ocken added second- and fourth-place finishes in the shotput and discus, respectively. The senior had a throw of 31-7 in the shotput and 86-7 in the discus. Barriga placed third in the 1,600 meters (6 minutes, 10.01 seconds) and fourth in the 800 (2:46.87).
Sophie Yebra finished third in the 3,200 (14:12.45) to bring home another medal for the Mustangs.
“With only one league meet and one invitational left before the CMC Championships, I like where my girls’ team is at,” Hall said. “Our goal from the beginning was to maintain the league title after winning (it) last year. I think we’ve got a good chance, but the CMC meet is always a battle.”
Varsity boys
Middletown’s varsity boys placed 10th in the team standings led by Landon Pisaro’s third-place finish in the 3,200 (11:57.08) and a fifth-place finish by Seth Watson in the discus (122-9).
Clear Lake’s Nolan Ewing took fifth in the 200 (23.81) and sixth in the 100 (11.83).
Middletown’s 4×100 relay team of Watson, Bryton Caviness, Esteban Muniz and Alexander Gonzales came in sixth (48.63).
JV girls
Middletown placed fourth as a team. Lupita Cabrera won the 3,200 (15:59.04) and was second in the 1,600 (6:48.12) while teammate Crystal Duval was second in the shotput (28-1) and third in the discus (76-0).
Jolene Holley came away with a medal in the high jump, placing second in 4-8, and she also finished sixth in the 200 (30.72).
Other top finishers were Jadyn Owens, who was fourth in the long jump (12-1), and Emma Stark, who placed fifth in the 300 hurdles (1:04.72) and sixth in the 100 hurdles (20.79).
“Joline Holley cleared 4-8 in the high jump, tying the best mark for JV girls, but she was given second place based on previous attempts,” Hall said. “Holley continues to impress e with her improvement as the season continues. She is now only three inches off the school record, and she’s only a freshman.”
Added Hall, “Crystal Duval is another impressive athlete that joined the team this year. She threw new personal best in each of the throwing events and finished the day with two medals.”

Copper Garrity had a big day for Clear Lake, taking third and winning a medal in the 800 (2:26.0) while also placing fourth in the 1,600 (5:19.81).
