Cougars return to action after three-week layoff, fall to 1-1

FORT BRAGG >> In a game that was pretty much all about defense, the Fort Bragg Cubs shut out the Northshore Cougars 14-0 in the pee wee division of the Mendo-Lake Empire Junior Football League on Saturday in Fort Bragg.
“Our defense kept us in the game,” Northshore head coach Ernie Jones said as the Cougars returned from a three-week break. “The kids were able to rally to the ball. We just seemed a little off.”
Oliver Elgethun anchored the Westshore defense with five total tackles while Aydan Styer, a force at the line of scrimmage, added four tackles, two of them resulting in losses. Other leaders were Andreas Flores Smith with four total tackles, Kingdon Sullivan with three, and Dominic Hollander and Charlie Jones with two apiece.
On offense, Sullivan provided 50 yards rushing, including a 37-yard run, the Cougars’ biggest gainer of the game.
“The effort showed a team that continued to fight even when things weren’t clicking offensively,” Jones said.
Northshore (1-1) is on the road Saturday to play Cloverdale (1-2).
