LAKEPORT >> The Westshore Cardinals varsity youth football team improved to 2-0 on the season with a 33-0 win over Fort Bragg on Saturday night during Mendo-Lake Junior Empire League Football action in Lakeport.
The Cardinals still haven’t allowed a point this season as they also shut out Kelseyville 34-0 in their season opener Aug. 16 in Lakeport.
Fort Bragg
Westshore scored on the game’s first play from scrimmage as Pops Horne completed a 61-yard touchdown pass to Jayvon Evans. After forcing a punt, the Cardinals scored again on a 76-yard Landyn Collins run up the middle.
A blocked punt by Isaac Patino and recovered by Horne set up another Westshore touchdown in the first quarter, this time a 41-yard John Pasalo run that made it 20-0.
Collins’ 60-yard interception return for a touchdown opened the scoring in the second quarter. Minutes later Pasalo returned a punt 60 yards for another score. Horne added the extra point to make it 33-0, at which point the mercy rule went into effect.
Kelseyville
Just as in their win over Fort Bragg, the Cardinals wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in their season opener against Kelseyville as Horne completed a 2-yard pass to Evans to close out Westshore’s opening drive.
The Cardinals got the ball right back after recovering a fumble and scored on a Pasalo 20-yard run followed by an Isaiah McLoud conversion kick early in the second quarter. A Horne 54-yard touchdown pass to Evans closed out the scoring in the first half.
Kelseyville took the second-half kickoff and drove inside the Westshore 5-yard line before fumbling the ball. Andre Cook recovered at the 7-yard line and Westshore quickly moved the ball downfield, beginning with a 48-yard pass from Pasalo to Dillon Egan. Not long after Pasalo broke free on a 41-yard touchdown run. McLoud added the extra-point kick to make it 28-0.
Pasalo’s third TD run of the game, a 21-yarder, pushed the Westshore lead to 34-0 at which point the mercy rule went into effect.
Westshore has the Labor Day weekend off before returning to action Sept. 6 in Cloverdale against the 2-0 Chargers. Game times are 3:30 p.m. for the pee wees, 5:30 p.m. for the junior varsity and 7:30 p.m. for the varsity.
