John’s 16 kills propel Lady Cougars to 25-19, 25-12, 25-14 non-league victory

BOONVILLE >> Alyssa John’s 16 kills and two blocks powered the Upper Lake Cougars in a 25-19, 25-12, 25-14 victory over Anderson Valley during non-league varsity volleyball action Thursday in Boonville.
Minus two players because of illness, the Cougars took advantage of a huge service game from freshman Marina Quiett in the third set to seal the victory. Quiett finished with eight aces, two kills and two assists.
“Anderson Valley did a great job digging and their coverage was impressive,” Upper Lake head coach Fawn Rave said. “Everyone stepped up and helped out on the court tonight, and I’m looking forward to seeing them grow as a team.”
Aubree Sperber finished with 11 aces, nine kills and two blocks while Jordyn Parker added seven kills and two aces.
“Alyssa John, Aubree Sperber and Jordyn Parker had a great night swinging at the net,” Rave said.
Riley Sperber led the team with 23 assists and also had two aces and a kill.
Upper Lake rallied to win the junior varsity match, 18-25, 25-23, 15-11 behind seven aces, two kills and one ace from Sabrina Wenning, seven service points, two aces and two kills from Bristol Stiritz, and nine service points and two aces from Taylin Sharp.
“The girls pulled it off,” Upper Lake head coach Raelene Cromwell said of the come-from-behind win.
Upper Lake’s varsity returns to action Tuesday in Mendocino.
