UPPER LAKE >> Freshman pitcher Grace Rhodes struck out 12 while pitching the Cloverdale Eagles past the Upper Lake Cougars, 21-1, in North Central League I softball action Thursday afternoon in Upper Lake.

Rhodes also homered in the five-inning game, which was called early because of the 10-run mercy rule. She went 3-for-5, part of a 15-hit Cloverdale attack, and scored four times as the Eagles improved to 2-0 in league play and 7-2 overall.

Every Cloverdale starter had at least one hit and 10 different Eagles drove in runs.

“We gave up a lot of runs on errors,” Upper Lake head coach Janice Klier said. “It’s spring break, so we’re down several players and our heads weren’t in the game.”

Bella Stillman was the losing pitcher. She struck out three and walked three.

Aubree Sperber went 1-for-2 with a RBI double for Upper Lake, which broke up Rhodes’ shutout with a run in the bottom of the fourth. Kylee Solorio and Alyna Solorio had the only other Upper Lake hits.

The Cougars are 1-1 in league and 3-2 overall.

Upper Lake is off until Tuesday, April 14 when it hosts Middletown at 4 p.m.
