FRESNO >> Sophia Olea won the 80-pound girls intermediate bracket, one of five members of the Gladiators Wrestling Club to reach the medal podium last weekend during the California USA Folkstyle State Championships in Fresno.
The five placers were more than any other Lake County team taking part in the competition.
Olea came away with a much-coveted state title and bear trophy. The next-best Gladiators finish went to Kailaya Philpot, who placed fourth in the schoolgirls 130-pound bracket. She opened the tournament with two pins before losing on a final-second takedown in her next match.
Jameson Philpot beat the No. 1 seed while placing fifth in the bantam boys 62-pound division.
Sixth-place medals went to Elijah Tucker in the intermediate boys 77-pound class and to John Young in the intermediate boys 105-pound bracket. It was Young’s second tournament back since breaking his arm earlier in the season.
“I am proud to have such a great group of kids that live and train in Lake County and hold it down as well as they do with the resources available to us,” Gladiators head coach Jonathan Philpot said. “These student-athletes work hard every day in school, sports and in life. Show up and show out.”
Other Gladiators wrestling in Fresno were Thomas Philpot, Anastasia Garcia, Fernando Calvillo and Sebastian James.
