KELSEYVILLE >> Kelseyville High School, two-time defending North Central League I champion, beat Round Valley 25-2, 25-15, 25-14 in the league opener for both these boys volleyball teams Thursday night in Kelseyville.
“We played so well in the first set that I felt the need to shake things up a little bit,” Kelseyville head coach Kc White said. “I got everyone into the game at some point tonight, and even though we won comfortably, I really wanted my team to learn tonight, so I put them in positions that they hadn’t been before. It tested their patience and resolve, which was on the edge of teetering at times tonight, but they battled through and they will only come out stronger because of it.”
Alex Jimenez led the Knights (1-0 league, 2-0 overall) with five kills and three aces. Luis Alvarado added three kills and five aces, Andon Beall had three kills and three aces, while Jose Mejia contributed six assists. Sebastian Cacho chipped in two kills, a team-best five digs and one ace.
“I was really impressed with Jose Mejia,” White said. “He has been coming along as a setting option for us, and he put up six assists in the third set tonight. Sebastian Cacho normally plays front row only, but tonight he served and played back row and collected a team-high five digs.”
Added White, “I’m really proud of the leaders of my team for taking a back seat tonight. They played the fist set and then either sat the rest of the game or played a different position that they are typically used to.”
Kelseyville makes three trips to Rohnert Park next week, beginning with a league match Monday against Credo at the Calinan Spots Center at 5 p.m. On Thursday, the Knights play against Technology in another league match at 6 p.m., and on Saturday, March 7 Kelseyville participates in the Rancho Cotate Tournament.
