KELSEYVILLE >> The Kelseyville High School boys volleyball team enters the season with a new coach but the same winning results as it took care of business with a 25-20, 25-13, 25-16 non-league victory over the Ukiah Wildcats on Tuesday evening in Kelseyville.

In their third year of existence, the Knights (1-0) won North Central League I championships in each of their first two seasons under former head coach Donelle McCallister.

“As a first-time head coach who has never even played the sport, I’m pretty reliant on my help,” head coach Kc White said. “It’s sure a boost to have Donelle and Maille McCallister in my corner to guide me on this journey. It also doesn’t hurt to have the league’s MVP from last season (Andon Beall) as the captain and leader of the group. It’s like having a second coach out there.”

Beall picked up where he left off last season, leading the Knights with 11 kills on 18 attempts and only one hitting error. He also had three assists, two aces and a block.

Other Kelseyville leaders in the team’s season opener were Diego Rico with 12 assists, nine digs and three aces, Miguel Corona with four assists, three aces and three digs, Kolby Medina with four kills, and George Cline, a freshman libero, with 22 digs.

“The boys came out hungry tonight,” White said. “We are only returning three students from last year’s team, so we have a lot of students with little to no volleyball experience, but you wouldn’t have known that from their performance tonight. They played loose, free. They’re only going to get better.”

“Diego Rico had some amazing sets tonight, including a crosscourt back set that was really something,” White said. “You wouldn’t know that he had only been playing volleyball for two weeks, and I can say that about almost everyone on my team. Tonight was pretty fun.”

Kelseyville hosts Round Valley on Thursday at 6 p.m. in the league opener for both teams.
