Lower Lake’s Gudino, Myer, Kelseyville’s Hayes claim MVP awards at CMC Championships

WILLITS >> Middletown High School placed second and Kelseyville third in the boys standings Friday during the Coastal Mountain Conference Wrestling Championship at Willits High School where the host Wolverines topped the field.

Lower Lake finished second in the girls standings with Middletown third. Top-three teams receive trophies while top-three finishers receive medals.

Kelseyville

Medalists for the Kelseyville boys were Cassius Cole, second at 122 pounds; Hayden Brown, second 146 pounds; Cody Holmes, second at 152 pounds; Andrew Souza, second at 159 pounds; Logun Whitte, third at 108 pounds; Westin Madsen, third at 217 pounds; and John Carr, third at 287 pounds.

Medalists for the Kelseyville girls were Laney Fossa, first at 117 pounds; Madeline Hayes, first at 122 pounds and outstanding tournament lightweight; Kaia Calhoun, second at 112 pounds; Kyia Gregoire, second at 142 pounds; Rebecca Sanchez, second at 192 pounds; and Hanna Bila, third at 237 pounds.

“I am really proud to say that Madeline Hayes earned All-Tournament honors as the outstanding lightweight female wrestler,” Kelseyville head coach Shane Carl said. “Our boys and girls worked together really well during the tournament. While some of the matches didn’t go the way we hoped, every experience is a chance to learn and grow. We’ll this week on improving our skills to get ready for divisionals.”

Added Carl, “I’m excited to share that we were the only team with both boys and girls placing in the top three as a team, and we brought home some trophies. All 16 of our wrestlers will be moving on to divisionals this Friday at Clear Lake High School, which is a huge achievement for us.”

Middletown

Owen Hawkins, Sophie Yebra and Alivia Stark all took home first-place medals for Middletown.

Josue Gutierrez earned a second-place medal while thirds went to Gerardo “Tito” Rodriguez, Ryder Rouderbusch, Ryan Halverson and Luke Mace.

Lower Lake

Among the Lower Lake wrestlers bringing home medals, two were named outstanding wrestlers during the tournament. Riley Givens won the 112-pound division and Mirabel Myer claimed the 172-pound championship. Myer was additionally honord as outstanding female heavyweight.

On the boys side, Arturo Gudino won the 108-pound division and was named the tournament’s outstanding lightweight.

Lower Lake wrestlers earning second-place medals were Kaylee Case (132 pounds) and Shayla McGrath (157 pounds).

Third-place medals went to Laylony Barocio, Aniya Meyer, Juliet Becker-Lewis and Daniel Garner.

Lake County Sports received no results from Clear Lake or Upper Lake high schools.

Schedule

Divisional championships open next Friday and run through Feb. 14 at Clear Lake High School in Lakeport. The North Coast Section Championships are Feb. 20-21 at James Logan High School in Union City followed by the CIF State Championships Feb. 26-27 in Bakersfield.
