SANTA ROSA >> Minus three of their top players, the Middletown High School junior varsity girls basketball team still beat Piner High School 45-41 in non-league action Wednesday evening in Santa Rosa.

Starters Chloe Pulido, Emma Davis and Grace Williams missed the game, but the Mustangs (15-3) were still able to build a 29-9 halftime lead.

“Piner came out very aggressive on defense (in the second half) and held us to only 16 points in the last two quarters, but the girls dug deep and pulled out the victory,” Middletown head coach Daryl Dacosta said. “The rest of the team stepped up big for us to get the win.”

Jolene Holley led the Mustangs with 12 points while Emma Jones and Jaqui Nunez added 10 apiece.

Middletown hosts Lower Lake in a North Central League I game that kicks off a four-game set between the two schools Friday at 3:30 p.m.
