Second-half surge propel Upper Lake A boys to 52-43 non-league victory

UPPER LAKE >> Despite jumping out to a 17-2 lead after one quarter, the Upper Lake Middle School A boys basketball team had its work cut out to beat Baechtol Grove 52-43 in non-league action Thursday in Upper Lake.

Baechtol Grove used a 22-6 second quarter to move in front 24-23 by halftime.

“I went to our bench early to make sure everyone earned minutes, and during the second and third quarters we struggled with turnovers and shots not falling,” Upper Lake head coach Dani Paige Gudmundson said.

Upper Lake rallied to take a 36-31 lead into the fourth quarter.

“In the final quarter we found our groove again, tightened up defensively and executed offensively to close out the game,” Gudmundson said.

Cayden Beecher led the Wildcats with 21 points, 10 steals, eight rebounds and five assists, and Jose Delgado Beecher added 10 points, eight assists and eight steals. Other leaders were Gage Schramm with seven points, seven assists, six steals and five rebounds, Bennett Guardina with six points and nine rebounds, Desmond Solomon with eight points and 12 rebounds, and Cam Allison with two points and seven rebounds.
