Thomas Philpot goes 8-0 with seven pins, wins two divisions

RIO LINDA >> Eighteen members of the Gladiator Wrestling Club combined to bring home a pile of medals while collecting 26 pins and two technical falls last weekend at the Junior Knights Folkstyle Tournament in Rio Linda.

Thomas Philpot led the way with two firsts, going 4-0 with four pins in the novice division, and also going 4-0 with three pins and a technical fall in the middle school division.

Alley Oakes, Lilly Oakes and Gary Oakes also brought home first-place medals, the three teaming up to go 7-0 with seven pins.

“The Gladiators came out with intensity and were eager to wrestle,” Gladiators coach Raylon Ray said. “Lilly, Alley and Gary Oakes showed up and showed out with fire in their hearts, and Mr. Thomas Philpot, aka Teapot, came to wrestle, came to win and dominated on the mat. The future is bright for this boy.”

Other firsts went to Alyssa Hopkins, 2-0 with two pins, and Kailaya Philpot, 2-0 with two pins.

Second-place medals went to Nevaeh Barocio, Fernando Calvillo, Jayce Hubert, and Fatima Riviera-Barbosa.

Third-place medalists were Jameson Philpot, Amias Kennedy, Hector Barocio, Leroy Hopkins and Cameryn Gamble-Ray.

Tucker Ivans and Waylon Ivans came in fourth.

The Gladiators also sent one wrestler to the SJWA Merced Tournament. Elijah Tucker brought home one first-place medal and one second-place medal, going 4-1 between his two divisions.
