UPPER LAKE >> Reduced to 13 players because of injuries, the Northshore Cougars dropped a 20-0 decision to Willits during Mendo-Lake Empire Junior Football League varsity play on Saturday at Upper Lake High School.

Willits (2-4) led 6-0 at halftime. Northshore (0-5-1) drove deep into Willits territory twice in the first two quarters – getting to the 5-yard line both times – only to lose a fumble once and turn it over on downs the other occasion.

“Mental mistakes killed both chances to score,” Northshore varsity coach Bradley Brackett said. “We weren’t able to execute when it mattered.”

Added Brackett, “Willits No. 84 was a kid with athleticism, and they used that in the second half. He had three big catches in the second half to seal the game. Willits played a tough football game and stayed disciplined on defense.”

Northshore is on the road next Saturday at Sonoma. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m.
