LAKEPORT >> John Pasalo rushed for 111 yards on only five carries and scored two touchdowns to lift the varsity Westshore Cardinals to a 30-0 win over the Willits Cougars during Mendo-Lake Empire Junior Football League action Saturday in Lakeport.
Westshore improved to 4-0 and will be home again this Saturday to play the 4-0 Lower Lake Trojans in a battle for sole possession of first place atop the league standings.
The Cardinals needed only four plays to get on the scoreboard, Pasalo capping a short drive with a 1-yard run and Isaiah McCloud making the conversion kick for an 8-0 Westshore lead. Clear Lake scored again after forcing a Willits punt, a Pops Horne pass to Nathan Heath putting the ball at the Willits 1-yard line where Horne scored on the next play.
In the second quarter, Pasalo’s 76-yard run on first down following a Willits punt pushed the Westshore lead to 24-0.
Jake Hayes’ 45-yard interception return for a touchdown followed a few players later.
The mercy rule came into play with the Cardinals leading 30-0.
Horne completed both of his passes for 28 yards.
On defense, Aaron Wangberg led the Cardinals with six solo tackles while Michael Knight had five.
“Our kids have been doing such a great job this year putting in as much work as they can playing as a team,” Westshore head coach Sid Percaccio said. “We are looking forward to the upcoming battle with Lower Lake this coming weekend.”
