UKIAH >> Carly Johnson’s seven kills and eight digs helped, but the Middletown High School varsity volleyball team lost on the road Thursday night in Ukiah, the host Wildcats beating the Mustangs 25-17, 25-12, 20-25, 25-14 in non-league action.

“We have been working on finding the right groove,” Middletown head coach Erika Galvan said. “Our passing was better tonight. Ukiah’s defense is pretty solid and not many attacks finished as kills.”

Jordyn Harbison had 10 digs and seven service points for Middletown, Bridget Lisenbee added eight service points and six assists, Trinity Galvan finished with 16 digs, 10 service points and six assists, and Harley Holley had five kills, five service points and two aces.

The Mustangs travel to St. Helena for a tournament on Saturday. They open their North Central League I schedule at home Tuesday against Cloverdale.

In junior varsity action Thursday, Ukiah beat Middletown 25-16, 25-13.

“Tough loss, but to an extremely talented Ukiah JV team,” Middletown head coach Vanessa Davis said. “Emma Davis had some amazing digs and saves.”

Davis, an outside hitter, led the team with 11 digs and also had three kills and once ace. Another outside hitter, Emma Jones, contributed four service points, two aces and two kills, and Jolene Holley, a middle blocker, added three kills.

“It was the best practice game I could have hoped for this early in the season,” Davis said. “The Mustangs did well battling intense hits and were aggressive on defense. I am happy with our progression so far this season.”

Middletown’s JVs open league play Tuesday at home against Cloverdale at 5 p.m. The varsity match follows.
