VACAVILLE >> Middletown High School’s cross country team opened a new season Saturday at the annual Lagoon Valley Classic in Vacaville where the 11 competing Mustangs competed in races of 2 or 3 miles, depending on their division.

“We will have full boys and girls teams this year, but not everyone could make the race due to the fair (Lake County Fair),” Middletown head coach Taylor Tiraterra said. “We lost a lot of great seniors last year, so we’re rebuilding the team with new recruits this year.”

And Middletown’s future looks bright, according to Tiraterra.

“All that said, we had some great performances,” Tiraterra said.

Ren Ueno placed 87th out of 192 runners in the small school varsity boys 3-mile race, setting a personal-best time on the course with a finishing time of 19 minutes, 44.1 seconds.

Len Rivas, a senior, finished 57th out of 131 runners in the small school varsity girls 3-mile race with a time of 24:19.9.

“We’re excited to work with her this year,” Tiraterra said.

“Shoutouts as well to our brand new runner, Maddison Ligher, who showed great pacing ability in her first race, and returning runners Gerardo Rodriguez and Isael Haro, both of whom had great surges toward the end of the race.”

Lighter completed the frosh-soph girls 2-mile race in 23:11.9. Haro (20:09.5) and Rodriguez (22:04.1) ran in the 3-mile small school varsity boys division.

Middletown returns to action Sept. 10 in Fort Bragg for the first North Central League I meet of the season. Clear Lake, Kelseyville, Lower Lake, Upper Lake, St. Helena, Willits Cloverdale and host Fort Bragg will also run. Middletown will score against St. Helena.
