Led by Cora Holley, Eagles win marathon five-set match against Marin College

KENTFIELD >> Mendocino College’s Middletown High School connection of Cora Holley and Makayla Mace paid huge dividends Wednesday as the Eagles opened their Bay Valley Conference schedule with a hold-onto-your-seats 25-21, 25-17, 24-26, 27-29, 15-8 victory over Marin College in Kentfield.
Holley led Mendocino (1-0 conference, 5-8 overall) with 24 kills while Mace added 16 more.
“We played well and did what we needed to do,” Mendocino College head coach Kat Edmonds aid. “We made some adjustments on the fly. The players responded very well. Cora Holley had some big plays for us tonight that were energy changing.”
“In the fifth set, they really showed a lot of heart and energy as a team and came together,” Mendocino College assistant coach Marci Psalmonds said. “I’m really looking forward to the rest of the season.”
The five-set win had several Mendocino College players actively involved, including Cali Schnabl (Kelseyville) with 32 digs, Jayden Paulich (Kelseyville) with 43 assists, 15 digs and five aces), Emily Gersalia (Clear Lake) with 15 digs, Brooke Benson (Lower Lake) with nine kills and four blocks, Briana Sanchez (Ukiah) with seven kills and five blocks, and Ava Diaz (Ukiah) with seven digs and two aces.
“Overall, it was a good team win,” Edmonds said.
Mendocino College hosts Los Medanos College on Friday at 6 p.m.
