LAKEPORT >> Jair Inostroza Carrillo and Sebastian Cacho scored two goals apiece while Luis Alvarado added a goal and three assists as the Kelseyville High School varsity boys soccer team opened a new season with a 5-0 victory over the Clear Lake Cardinals in non-league action Thursday at Lakeport.

In addition to being the season opener for the Knights (1-0) and head coach Kc White, it was Kelseyville’s first game since moving back to the fall sports season. The Knights played winter soccer each of the past three years.

“It’s nice to be playing in the fall again,” White said. “We are heavy senior this year and it showed today as a senior either scoring or assisted on every goal today.”

Kelseyville had the ball on Clear Lake’s side of the field most of the game and ended up taking 26 shots on goal.

“Credit to the two goalies for Clear Lake,” White said. “They played very well.”

Kelseyville went up 1-0 in the 23rd minute on a Carrillo goal set up by an Alvarado pass. The Knights took a 2-0 lead a few minutes later.

“(Diego) Rick sent a beautiful corner into the box and found the head of Alvarado (for the goal),” White said.

Alvarado’s second assist set up Carrillo’s second goal early in the second half as the Knights made it a 3-0 game.

“We continued to pressure their goal the entire second half and got a little more breathing room when Cacho calmly nailed a penalty (kick) in the 69th minute,” White said.

Cacho scored again two minutes later on the third assist of the night from Alvarado, making it 5-0.

White said there was no shortage of solid performances by the Knights, who were battling triple-digit heat as well as the Cardinals.

“My defense, anchored by senior captain Miguel Corona and junior Gerardo Garcia, deserves a ton of credit for keeping our keeper, Diego Serrato, clean,” White said “We allowed just one shot on goal. It’s nice to have Serrato back this year after suffering an injury early last season.”

Clear Lake (0-2) played its second game this season and is still looking for its first goal. The Cardinals try again Friday when they visit Geyserville in a non-league game at 4 p.m. Kelseyville hits the road Saturday to play Fortuna at 1 p.m.

Players on the varsity boys and girls teams from both schools met at midfield to hold a moment of silence in support of Clear Lake High alum, Upper Lake High athletic director and longtime soccer official Brian Figg following the death of his wife Mandy earlier in the week.

“I have known Brian most of my life in some aspect,” White said. “Whether it was when I was a kid and he played baseball with my two brothers, or when he was my P.E. teacher at Terrace Middle School, or when he was my soccer coach for three years at Clear Lake High School. We go back quite a bit. Brian is so selfless. First and foremost, he always looks to help others, as evidenced by the many professional hats he wears. And he does all of the things without breaking a sweat.

“When I heard about his wife, my heart absolutely broke for him. I cannot imagine what Brian is going through. My condolences go out to him, his family, and the Lindeblad family, all staples of the Lake County community. They have all done so much to support us through the years, especially Brian, and it is now our turn to lift them up with positive, heartfelt messages of support.

“The tribute for his wife was beautiful tonight and I was honored to be a part of it. Huge thank you to Clear Lake High School, especially Clear Lake AD Schad Schweitzer for organizing it. It was an amazing tribute.”
