FORT BRAGG >> Upper Lake High School junior Saphira Hughes won the varsity girls long jump and finished second in the 100 meters during a Coastal Mountain Conference track and field meet Wednesday in Fort Bragg.

Hughes cleared 15 feet, 2 inches in the long jump. She completed the 100 in 14.2 seconds.

Two other Cougars placed second in their respective events. Jack Demunk recorded a toss of 36-5 in the varsity boys shotput while Angelina Bendure cleared 26-1 in the varsity girls shotput.

“It was a tough day for of my athletes out in the cold of Fort Bragg,” Upper Lake head coach Thomas Santana said. “They all gave it their all. We only have a couple of athletes who haven’t qualified for CMCs (Coastal Mountain Championships on May 7), but we still have more meets to make sure they reach that goal.”

Upper Lake returns to action next Wednesday in Lower Lake.
