LAYTONVILLE >> Paelynn Beall homered and Brooke Poff had a two-run single as the Mountain Vista Middle School softball team beat Laytonville 20-8 on Wednesday in Laytonville.
The game was stopped after four innings because of the 10-run mercy rule.
Beall’s homer and Poff’s single were the only hits by the Lancers (3-1), who made the most of 25 walks issues by Laytonville pitcher. Three other Mountain Vista batters were hit by pitches.
“Laytonville pitching is a work in progress,” Kelseyville head coach Patrick Mick said. “We didn’t let our girls steal one base, just went station to station one at a tie to extend the game so our reserves could get some at-bats.”
Making their middle school pitching debuts were Maylee Antoni, who worked the first two innings and struck out two, and Amelia Kennedy, who pitched one inning and struck out two. Both are sixth-graders.
“I was so proud of them and pleasantly surprised,” Mick said. “Having a lot of pitching I a good problem to have. Overall, these kinds of games are agonizing to watch and coach, but we got through it.”
