ORLAND >> Orland rallied with two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, that after Kelseyville had taken the lead with a run in the top half, to beat the Knights 7-6 in non-league varsity softball action Wednesday afternoon in Orland.
Kelseyville (0-3) lost to Orland 6-4 in its season opener March 11 in Kelseyville, and the rematch appeared to be going the Knights’ way as they built a 5-1 lead. The Trojans (6-4) rallied with four runs after two were out in the bottom of the sixth to tie it up, taking advantage of Kelseyville miscues in the field.
Though the walk-off loss was a frustrating one for the Knights, first-year head coach Brittany Rumfelt said her players remain positive.
“Every game has been a massive improvement considering this is our third game and we have been facing opponents with close to 10 games under their belt,” Rumfelt said.
Kelseyville broke a 1-1 tie with two runs in the top of the fourth. The Knights add two more runs in the fifth to go up 5-1.
Mati Mateer went 2-for-4 for the Knights while Ashlyn Wurm, Jordyn Wurm, Cali Schnabl, Aubree Sperber, Josie Keithly and Morgan Rogers all had hits. Rogers was the losing pitcher. She struck out four and walked three.
“Morgan Rogers threw a great game,” Rumfelt said.
Jordyn Wurm, the Knights’ freshman catcher, picked off a runner at third base.
“We are making great progress quickly and keep working to get better with a great group of athletes who have great attitudes,” Rumfelt said.
Kelseyville hosts Lower Lake (2-3-1) in the North Central League I opener for both teams Friday at 4 p.m.
