KELSEYVILLE >> In the first of two North Central League I meetings this season between last year’s two boys volleyball co-champions, round one went to the Kelseyville Knights, 25-23, 25-16, 25-23, over Roseland University Prep on Thursday night in Kelseyville.

“The boys played a little tight in the first set,” Kelseyville head coach Donelle McCallister said. “We got behind by six points and had to make up the deficit. Came back to win off of back row defense from Otoniel Rivas and offense from setter Julian Armas, who connected with Jayden Teabo and Andon Beall.”

Beall led the Knights (3-0 league, 4-0 overall) with 15 kills, one more than Teabo’s 14. Jorge Bernal added six more. Armas led the team with 33 assists while Rivias finished had a team-best 30 digs.

“In the second set they brought the energy and the heat through defense and offense,” McCallister said. “In the third set we were up by 11 and RUP hustled and served tough. We were tied at 20 and we missed some key serves. Fabrizio Herrera made a couple of key tips on some tight sets while Kolby Median picked up some crucial digs to keep us in the game.

“Diego Serrato finally connected on the right side to get a strong kill, which put us up at 24-22,” McCallister added. “Julian missed the game-point serve to bring the score to 24-23. Next point (match point) was a long rally with a lot of hustle plays, and we won the match.”

It was the first league loss for Roseland University Prep (3-1, 5-2).

Kelseyville beat Technology High School 25-18, 25-15, 25-14 on Monday night in Rohnert Park.

“The last time we played Tech was at the Rio Lindo Christian Academy in Healdsburg at a tournament and we lost (two sets to one). At that match we were without Jayden Teabo, Julian Armas and Fabrizio Herrera. It made a huge difference having our full team at this recent match.”

Beall led the Knights with 10 kill and Armas had 18 assists. Other leaders were George Baqleh with five aces, and Rivas with 13 digs. Jozef Arias also made some key digs to go along with solid passing and serving.

Kelseyville is home Monday to take on Credo.
