BOONVILLE >> Kelseyville opened defense of the North Central League I co-championship it won a year ago with a 25-22, 25-11, 25-20 victory over Anderson Valley on Thursday in the league opener for both teams at Boonville.

“We started a little lethargic,” Kelseyville head coach Donelle McCallister said. “We’re still dealing with players that are battling colds and flus. Anderson Valley only had six kids for their first-year team. They are consistent in passing and not making mistakes with a lot of free balls and shots over the net, which tends to shut down some of the energy of the match, but they hung in there for being a first-year team.”

Kelseyville middle blocker Andon Beall had 18 kills on 34 arm swings with only three errors. Jayden Teabo added 15 kills and led the team with four aces. George Bagleh added three aces.

Other team leaders were Otoniel Rivas with 21 digs in 23 attempts and Jorge Bernal with 13 digs in 15 attempts. Both Rivas and Jose Arias also passed the ball very well, according to McCallister. Julian Armas also had a team-best 29 assists.

Kelseyville has a big week coming up, according to McCallister. The Knights play Technology in Rohnert Park on Monday and return home Thursday to take on Roseland University Prep, the team they tied for the league title a year ago.

“We lost to them (Technology) at the Rio Lindo Christian Academy Tournament in Healdsburg (on March 4),” McCallister said.

Kelseyville is 1-0 in league play and 6-9 overall.
