UPPER LAKE >> After leaving the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth inning of a 10-10 game, the Upper Lake Cougars loaded them up again in the seventh before Alan Alvarado’s RBI single broke that tie once and for all in an 11-10 non-league victory over the Willits Wolverines on Friday afternoon in Upper Lake.
It was the season opener for the Cougars (1-0) as well as head coach Don Meri’s varsity baseball debut. Upper Lake won despite being short a couple of starters – one who is waiting to become eligible after transferring and another who was away for a welding competition. The Cougars may also be without their top returning player from last season, pitcher Kyler Brothers, who is recovering from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident, and is unlikely to return soon, or even at all, according to Meri.
“Maybe we get him back real late, but I don’t know,” Meri said.
Upper Lake trailed 10-4 until tying the game with a six-run sixth. The Cougars were looking for more when the big rally ended.
Jerod Rosales went 3-for-5 to spark Upper Lake on offense while Alvarado and Landen Robinson also added hits. Carlos Narvaes pitched two innings in relief of starter George Rahmer to earn the victory. Rahmer struck out four during his five innings on the mound.
“My starting infield is not bad,” Meri said of his first impression of the 2025 Cougars. “If I can get some of my guys back, I think we’ll be OK.”
Upper Lake is scheduled to host South Fork on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
