Hoogendoorn scores 28 in M’town win

Senior moves into second place on school’s career points list, takes aim on record

SANTA ROSA >> Mia Hoogendoorn’s second straight 28-point game carried the Middletown Mustangs to a 54-33 non-league victory over the Sonoma Academy Coyotes in varsity girls basketball action Wednesday in Santa Rosa.

Hoogendoorn, a senior who scored her 1,000th career point on Nov. 23, moved up to second place on Middletown’s list of career scoring leaders with 1,257 points, passing Tyler Hunt (1,230). She is rapidly closing in on Ashlyn Welton’s school-record total of 1,314 points, a mark Hoogendoorn could eclipse as early as next week.

Middletown (10-4) wasted no time jumping on Sonoma Academy, outscoring the Coyotes 17-5 in the first quarter.

Jordyn Harbison added 13 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, and Izzi Hoogendoorn had seven points. Mia Hoogendoorn finished with four 3-pointers.

Middletown is home Friday to play North Central League I leader Fort Bragg (3-0). Middletown can move into a first-place tie atop the league standings with a victory.

There was no junior varsity game Wednesday.
