SANTA ROSA >> The Middletown and Kelseyville varsity girls basketball teams dropped their first-round games Thursday at the Piner Tournament in Santa Rosa and will play each other Friday in the consolation semifinals at 4 p.m.

“I’m kind of frustrated that we go to these out-of-county tourneys and now will play a league team, but it is what it is,” Middletown head coach Roxi Holt said following what she called a “frustrating” 34-21 loss to Healdsburg, the same team that beat the Mustangs 36-34 last year in the opening round of the North Coast Section playoffs, ending their season.

Meanwhile, Kelseyville dropped into the consolation bracket with a 44-33 loss to Rancho Cotate of Rohnert Park.

Middletown

While the Mustangs held a 9-8 lead against Healdsburg after one quarter, Middletown struggled to score points the rest of the way.

“We played very sloppy, way too many turnovers,” Holt said. “You cannot win a game scoring as low as we did. We have been dealing with illness and injury and need to get healthy quickly.”

Other than Mia Hoogendoorn’s 16 points, no other Middletown player had more than two points as the Mustangs (2-1) dropped their first game of the season.

“We hung with them until late in the third quarter,” Holt said.

Kelseyville

Kelseyville held a 16-14 lead at halftime against Rancho Cotate in its tournament opener, but the Cougars pushed ahead to stay with an 18-6 third quarter, the difference in the game.

“We are having trouble initiating and running our offense,” Kelseyville head coach Tim Conrad said.  “I felt like we were more prepared to play tonight, but the results aren’t there right now. We also had a rough start as Mati Mateer had a head injury before the game and was unavailable. Freak accident, and hopefully she will be able to go tomorrow (Friday). If you ask her, she’s playing.”

Olivia Hommer led Kelseyville (0-2) with 17 points, going 5-for-6 from the free-throw line, and she also had five rebounds. Cali Schnabl added seven points, Briana Davis contributed six points, five rebounds and five blocks, Nyejzniya Krohn pulled down a team-best seven rebounds, and Ashlyn Wurm had six rebounds and three steals.

Lower Lake draws Round Valley in the consolation semifinals Friday at 3:30 p.m.

The Trojans (0-2) stayed close to Windsor most of the way and trailed by only seven points with six minutes left in the game.

“Too many (Lower Lake) fouls and a couple of (Windsor) 3-pointers sealed it,” Lower Lake head coach Shannon Tubbs said.

Benson hit a pair of 3-pointers for the Trojans. Jamiya Lee-Ayers finished with six points while Izabela Hernandez, Mary Watson and Ayla Ales had five points apiece.

Lower Lake’s junior varsity team beat Bear Creek 52-11 in the opening round of the Galt Tournament in Galt led by 10 points apiece from Olivia Paul and Khaya Chaney.

The Trojans (2-0) also received eight points from Madelyn Garner, seven from Lily Milano and six from Leanna Ortega.

“This was a great team effort tonight,” Lower Lake head coach Jessica Wiley said. “Everyone stepped up and worked together for the win.”
