FORT BRAGG >> In a must-win situation, the Middletown Mustangs came through with a 3-0 shutout victory over the Fort Bragg Timberwolves in North Central League I boys soccer action Thursday in Fort Bragg.
And the Mustangs (7-1-1) aren’t out of the woods yet. While pulling even with Fort Bragg (7-1-1) atop the league standings, they face another must-win situation next Tuesday at home against Lower Lake (7-2), the only team that has beaten them this season. While Middletown draws Lower Lake in its final league game, Fort Bragg travels to Willits (4-5), setting up several possible scenarios as to who will win all or part of the league title.
Middletown can guarantee itself no worse than a co-championship with a victory. If Middletown wins and Fort Bragg loses, the Mustangs claim the title outright. However, if Lower Lake and Fort Bragg both win, Fort Bragg would secure the outright championship.
Bryan Sanchez, Seth Watson and Alex Hernandez, all team captains for the Mustangs, scored one goal each in Middletown’s win. The last time the two teams squared off, they battled to a 3-3 tie Oct. 8 in Middletown.
Middletown dropped a 3-0 decision at Lower Lake on Oct. 10 in Lower Lake.
