LAKEPORT >> The Kelseyville GOATs under-12 boys soccer team won a penalty-kick shootout to claim the championship in the Konocti Kup tournament, which wrapped up its two-day run Sunday at Westside Park in Lakeport.
The undefeated GOATs went 3-0 during the competition. Their first two wins put them into the under-12 championship game against the Lakeport GOATs, which ended tied 1-1 at the end of regulation play.
“The game was intense, many scoring opportunities were missed due to over-shooting by both teams, and the game came down to the wire,” Kelseyville head coach Eric Johnson said. “Lakeport has a strong team, and their goalies seemed to have a read on our players all game.”
Under the shootout rules, each team receives five penalty kicks. Kelseyville keeper Chandler Johnson was able to stop two of the five Lakeport attempts, but his Lakeport counterpart was only able to stop one. While winning the shootout 4-3, Angle Jimenez-Ochoa, TJ Skeen, Adrian Castillo and Anthony Lopez all scored for Kelseyville.
“This is my third year coaching in the Kup tournament and the first time I have even seen it come to PKs,” Johnson said. “It was stressful, but our boys handled it well. We are looking forward to the rest of an already exciting season.”
