LAKEPORT >> The Dirt Eaters from Upper Lake beat Kelseyville in a penalty-kick shootout Saturday in the under-14 championship game of the Konocti Kup Tournament in Lakeport.
The two teams battled to a 0-0 tie in regulation, forcing the shootout. Melissa Murphy, Jordin Hughes and Alesandra Zavala all made their shots while Upper Lake keeper Charlie Robbins blocked a pair of Kelseyville shots.
Upper Lake scored eight goals in its four tournament matches, including two each from Hughes, Zavala and Sabrina Wenning. Macy Jones and Kylee Foley also scored.
Anabella Espinoza, who faced her former Kelseyville teammates in the finals, was named MVP.
Upper Lake went 2-1 leading up to the championship game, the only loss coming against the same Kelseyville team the Dirt Eaters beat in the finals.
“I’m really proud of the team coming back from a 2-0 loss to Kelseyville, then holding them scoreless before winning on penalty kicks,” Upper Lake coach Fred Miller said.
