KELSEYVILLE >> Goals by Kylee Denham and Mikaela Rico staked Kelseyville to a 2-0 halftime led, and a pair of insurance goals by Hiliana Rico in the second half sealed the Knights’ 4-0 victory over the Middletown Mustangs in North Central League I girls soccer action Thursday in Kelseyville.
The Knights, who secured their second straight league championship on Tuesday, improved to 13-0 in the NCL I standings and 19-1-1 overall after winning for the 16th straight time. If Kelseyville prevails in its league finale Tuesday at Lower Lake, it will mark the second year in a row the Knights have gone undefeated.
“The Lady Knights had a great game tonight,” Kelseyville head coach Irma Rodriguez said. “A lot of credit goes to our defensive line of Lexxi Pantaleon, Ximena Herren, Brooke Poff, Dakotah Burton and Ana Gutierrez along with Dezi Anderson, Alexandra Garcia and Grace Hobbs, who came in and helped keep the defense strong. Ximena did a great job sweeping up balls that got through and stopping them before they could turn into dangerous scoring opportunities. There were a few times Middletown managed to get the ball behind us, but our girls recovered, caught back up, and shut down the attack.”
Added Rodriguez, “Goalie Andrea Jimenez also came up with some important saves to keep the Lady Mustangs off the scoreboard and help our defense earn the shutout.”
Kelseyville honored its seniors during the final home match of the regular season – Pantaleon, Hobbs, Denham, Vanessa Reyes, Mikaela Rico, Jacky Chavez and Lilly Rodriguez.
“It was a special night for our seniors, and getting the win made it even better,” Rodriguez said.
Kelseyville’s league finale Tuesday in Lower Lake starts at 6:15 p.m.
