MIDDLETOWN >> After digging themselves a 26-6 hole against undefeated Middletown, the Lower Lake Trojans battled back to make a game of it, falling 26-22 to the Colt in Mendo-Lake Empire Junior Football League varsity action Saturday night at Bill Foltmer Field.
Leading 14-6 at the half, Middletown (6-0) scored on each of its first two possessions of the second half to go up 26-6. Ismael Orozco’s 7-yard run, his second touchdown of the game, sparked Lower Lake’s comeback as the Trojans add the two-point conversion kick, also by Orozco, to make it 26-14. Following a Middletown fumble recovered by Lower Lake’s Ryder Steffen, Lower Lake was on the move again.
A 37-yard Steffen reception set up a 2-yard touchdown run by Jaymen Bagsby. Orozco again added the conversion kick to narrow the Middletown lead to 26-22.
Lower Lake (4-2) couldn’t recover an onside kickoff and Middletown was able to run out the remainder of the clock.
Roy Percoats had 17 carries for 106 yards for Lower Lake. Orozco anchored the defense with seven and a half tackles in addition to his 38 yards rushing, two touchdowns and two conversion kicks. Wyatt Chalecki added four and a half tackles on defense.
“I was really proud of how hard our guys worked all night,” Lower Lake head coach Mark Garner said. “They fought right to the last few seconds. We’ll regroup and get back to work for next week’s game.”
Lower Lake returns home next Saturday to host Kelseyville (3-3) at 7:30 p.m. Middletown hosts Cloverdale (1-4-1). Pee wee games at both locations start at 4 p.m. and junior varsity action follows at 5:30 p.m.
