UKIAH >> Mendocino College’s reluctant offense didn’t help a much better effort by the Eagles’ defense in a 25-17, 25-8, 25-16 loss to Solano College in the Bay Valley Conference opener for both of them women’s volleyball teams Wednesday night in Ukiah.

“We played good defensively,” Mendocino College head coach Kat Edmonds said. “We took breaks at being aggressive on the net and that’s when Solano went on a run.”

Montana Wells (Clear Lake) and Cora Holley (Middletown) each had seven kills for Mendocino College (0-1 conference, 6-16 overall) while Wells also had two blocks. Stella Hill (Clear Lake) added 13 digs, three kills and two aces, Maddy Brewster (Clear Lake) finished with 12 digs, two kills and one block, Aily Chavez (Willits) had 13 digs, and Jayden Paulich (Kelseyville) contributed 17 assists, seven digs and one ace.

“We need to be on more on offense than defense to become successful,” Edmonds said. “We are looking to switch gears Friday and get a win from Contra Costa.”

Mendocino College hosts Contra College on Friday beginning at 6 p.m.
