Eagles drops a pair on the road

Mendo College women fall to Merced, Diablo Valley College

PLEASANT HILL >> Mendocino College women’s volleyball team dropped a pair of non-conference matches Wednesday evening, falling to Merced College 25-8, 25-16, 29-27 and host Diablo Valley College 25-17, 25-21, 23-25, 25-18 in Pleasant Hill.

“We are hoping a couple more games and we will get out of the rut we are in,” Mendocino College head coach Kat Edmonds said. “We are fighting hard, we could just use a little more depth.”

Mendocino College (4-11) played better as the night wore on. In the late match against Diablo Valley College, the Eagles received solid play from setter Jayden Paulich (Kelseyville), who not only led the team with 30 assists, but had seven digs, three kills, three aces and a block.

Montana Wells (Clear Lake) led the offense with nine kills and also had a block and two aces. Stella Hill (Clear Lake) added seven kills and seven digs while Maddy Brewster (Clear Lake) finished with six kills, 12 digs and a block.

Also for the Eagles, Cora Holley (Middletown) contributed five kills and a block, and Breanna Pyzer (Middletown) anchored the defense with 21 digs.

Mendocino College had a rough opener against Merced College, losing in straight sets. The Eagles never really got their offense going as Hill, Brewster and Wells led the team with three kills apiece. On the defensive end, Brewster had 14 digs, Pyzer 12 and Hill 10. Hill also had two aces.

Nathaly Velasco added another six digs while Paulich finished with 12 assists, two aces and a block.

“We played really well at the end,” Edmonds said.

Mendocino College hits the road Friday to play Sacramento City College and Santa Rosa Junior College at Solano College in Fairfield. Match times are 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
