VALLEJO >> Middletown High School varsity football coach Kurtis Woodard said he looked up at the scoreboard and the game was over.

And it was still in the first half.

Putting up yet another huge second quarter, a well-established trend for Middletown this season, the Mustangs took apart the St. Patrick-St. Vincent Bruins on offense and defense Friday night, posting a 62-0 win in non-league action in Vallejo.

Middletown (4-1), a winner of four straight, scored 34 points in the second quarter to go up 48-0 at halftime.

“It was 41-0 almost before we knew it,” Woodard said of the Mustangs’ latest blowout win. “I had my second team in the whole second half.”

That second team, parts of which were already in the game late in the first half, also featured several sophomores seeing their first varsity action. Middletown did not have a junior varsity game Friday, so Woodard promoted all the JV sophomores to the varsity, and they all played. One of them, Colton Rodrigues, scored on a 14-yard run in the fourth quarter.

“I used an all-sophomore backfield in the fourth quarter,” Woodard said. “We’ve got some big boys there.”

While the Bruins (1-5) entered play with more than 800 passing yards on the season, Middletown’s defense allowed only 15 through the air. The St. Patrick-St. Vincent running game didn’t fare much better with only 33 yards.

“Everyone stepped up,” Woodard said. “I’m learning to have more confidence in my guys as we go through the season.”

Middletown opened up a 14-0 lead in the first quarter on a John Finney nine-yard run and a Jamisen Jackson 23-yard touchdown pass to Colton Karp, the first of two TD connections between Jackson and Karp during the game.

The Mustangs’ 34-point second quarter featured, in order, touchdowns by Tyler Galamay on a 10-yard run; a 29-yard Jackson scoring pass to Karp; a Tyler Galamay seven-yard run; an Esteban Muniz 10-yard run; and a Ryan Halverson one-yard run.

The scoring parade continued in the third quarter as Muniz scored on a two-yard run.

Jackson went 8-for-9 on his extra-point kicks.

Middletown finished with 294 yards rushing, including 113 by Galamay on 13 carries, and 69 yards each by Finney and Halverson. Jackson was 3-for-3 passing for 76 yards and the two TDs to Karp, his only two catches of the night.

Halverson’s eight total tackles led the Middletown defense while JV call-up Dre Goins had an interception.

Middletown returns home this Friday to play St. Helena (3-2) in the North Central League I South opener for both teams. St. Helena handed Middletown its only league loss last season and has won its last two meetings with the Mustangs.

GAME NOTES: Woodard said after the game the St. Patrick-St. Vincent chain crew thanked the Mustangs for their sportsmanship on the sideline despite the one-sided nature of the game. “They said ‘You have class-act team,’” Woodard said … In their last four games the Mustangs have scored 62, 48, 41 and 42 points … Middletown had winning streaks of four and seven games last season while winning the North Coast Section Division 7 championship.
