UPPER LAKE >> The Upper Lake Cougars kept it close most of the way before falling 41-22 to the St. Helena Saints in North Central League I interlock varsity football action on homecoming Friday night at Upper Lake High School.

“The offense found some rhythm, but details are still in need of fine-tuning,” Upper Lake head coach John Toohey said. “Antario Wyman is a special athlete and showed it tonight.”

Wyman caught three passes for 164 yards and two touchdowns as Upper Lake (1-4) scored its most points since a 24-0 win over Cloverdale during the 2024 season. Wyman’s night would have been much bigger if penalties had not erased two other touchdown passes of 73 and 65 yards.

“We are still on a good trajectory,” Toohey said of his team’s steady improvement. “I am happy about the progress we made tonight.”

Upper Lake trailed 27-16 early in the fourth quarter. St. Helena (3-2) was able to pull away with touchdowns on back-to-back possessions. The Saints led 6-0 after one quarter, 20-8 at halftime and 27-16 through three quarters.

Upper Lake quarterback Corbyn Woolley went 5-for-13 for 180 yards with the two TD passes to Wyman and one interception. Jacob Weldon rushed for the Cougars’ other score, part of a 91-yard night on 10 carries.

Caiden Sneed (eight solo tackles, two assists) and Faalalea (eight solo tackles, one assist) led the Cougars’ defense. Travis McCutcheon added six tackles and three assists, with one tackle for loss, and Jordan Reyes and Shaun way each had five solo stops. Other leaders were TJ Malicay with four tackles and one assist, and Isaac Caballero with one tackle, two assists and one sack.

“We shot ourselves in the foot early and gave St. Helena some short fields,” Toohey said. “We had trouble slowing down their run game and gave up some long third-down conversions. We are young and inexperienced at linebacker but getting better. The inexperienced showed tonight.”

Upper Lake opens its North Central League I North schedule next Friday in Willits against the Wolverines (2-4) at 7 p.m.
