Cardinals turn back Eagles at home, Cougars fall on road to Timberwolves

MIDDLETOWN >> Juliza Sevilla scored twice and new goalkeeper Maddy de la Torre didn’t allow a shot past her as the Lower Lake Trojans improved to 4-0 in the North Central League I girls soccer standings with a 3-0 victory over the Middletown Mustangs on Tuesday in Middletown.
De la Torre, a transfer student who just became eligible, helped keep the Trojans, 8-3-1 overall, perfect in the NCL I standings with plenty of help from her teammates.
“Our girls played like we wanted them to,” Lower Lake head coach Anna Brin said. “Our defense was tough and tight. Our offense was passing and communicating and taking shots.”
In addition to her two goals, Sevilla had the assist on a goal by teammate Nataly Perez. Evelyn Vargas and Zully Esquivel also had assists.
“It’s so rewarding to watch our girls improve and work more and more as a team,” Brin said.
Middletown is 2-2 in league and 6-6 overall.
Lower Lake visits Fort Bragg on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. Middletown plays Clear Lake in Lakeport on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

Clear Lake 5, Cloverdale 3
At Lakeport, Jeanette Luevano scored her two goals in the first half while Sellena Carbajal had goals in each half as the Clear Lake Cardinals turned back the Cloverdale Eagles.
Clear Lake (2-2, 9-2-1) built a 4-2 halftime lead. Hailey Perez also scored for the Cardinals. Assists went to Sellena Carbajal, Isabelle Carbajal, Amelie Davis and Haylie Garcia.
“We’re headed on the right path,” Clear Lake head coach Gustavo Carbajal said of the Cardinals’ third straight win, two of them league games. “Proud o the team’s effort in today’s game.”

The Cardinals host Middletown on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
Kelseyville 2, Willits 1
At Kelseyville, it wasn’t their best effort of the season by far, but the Kelseyville Knights still came away with the win against the Willits Wolverines.
Hiliana Rico and Aubrey Mullen scored first-half goals that the Kelseyville defense made stand up. Willits scored on a penalty kick with minutes remaining in the game to avoid the shutout.
Mikaela Rico assisted on Hiliana Rico’s goal that gave Kelseyville a 1-0 lead just five minutes into the game.
“This may not have been our best game, but I’m incredibly proud of the way our girls continued to fight from start to finish,” Kelseyville head coach Irma Rodriguez said. “Their determination, effort and perseverance made this hard-fought victory possible.”
Kelseyville (4-0, 10-1-1) is 10-0-1 in its last 11 games. The Knights host Cloverdale on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
Fort Bragg 2, Upper Lake 1
At Fort Bragg, the Fort Bragg Timberwolves defeated the Upper Lake Cougars, making two first-half goals stand up in the win.
Upper Lake (1-3, 1-8) avoided the shutout with a second-half goal. Scoring and other details weren’t reported.
The Cougars play Thursday in Willits at 5 p.m.
