Fort Bragg runners edge M’town at Willits

Varsity boys race at 2.87-mile Brooktrails course comes down to sixth-man tiebreaker

WILLITS >> The Fort Bragg and Middletown boys ran neck and neck during a North Central League I cross country meet Wednesday at the 2.87 Brooktrails course, so much so that the race came down to a sixth-man tiebeaker that went to Fort Bragg.

Both teams were tied at 50 points with their first five runners across the finish line. Fort Bragg’s sixth-place finisher placed 20^th overall while Middletown’s sixth runner finished 30^th.

Varsity boys

Johann Garcia and Walker Aycock of Fort Bragg finished first and second in 17 minutes flat and 17 minutes, 12 seconds, respectively. Middletown had the next three finishers, led by Tucker West (18:09) in front of teammates Isael Haro (18:18) and Ren Ueno (18:31).

Kelseyville’s Jace Odin Pintell was sixth in 18:32 while teammate Maverick Watson was 10^th in 19:49, just ahead of Middletown’s Gerardo Rodriguez, 11^th in 19:49.

Lower Lake’s Daniel Zamora came in 19^th in 20:16.

Among other complete teams in the field (at least five runners), Willits was third with 73 points, St. Helena fourth with 74, and Kelseyville fifth with 104. Clear Lake, Upper Lake, Lower Lake and Cloverdale were all incomplete.

Girls

Cloverdale won the girls race with 46 points, finishing ahead of St. Helena (65), Willits (67), Kelseyville (72) and Middletown (86). Fort Bragg, Clear Lake, Lower Lake and Upper Lake were incomplete.

Amaralaya Willner was first to the finish line in 22:30, beating Cloverdale’s Malia McGrath (22:59) by a healthy 29 seconds. Lupita Cabrera of Middletown was third in 23:36.

Aglin Aguilar of Kelseyville placed ninth overall in 25:41 and Nick Lopez of Middletown finished 12^th in 27:58.

Among other Lake County schools in the field, Madison May of Clear Lake placed 15^th in 28:54, Lower Lake’s Shayla McGrath was 19^th in 30:10, and Upper Lake’s Regan Pittman 2as 32^nd in 35:04.

Schedule

NCL I teams are scheduled to take next Wednesday off before returning to action Sept. 30 in St. Helena.
