Team posts wins in all six of its matches, drops only one set in regional final

MANTECA >> The Never Say Die 15s club volleyball team won a regional championship over the weekend in Manteca, going 6-0 and dropping only one set along the way, that in the championship match against Spark 15-1 Natalie.

In order of matches played, the 15s beat Golden Bear 15 Blue 25-8, 25-6, Academy West 15 Gold-1 25-12, 25-10, Spark 15-2 Anthony 25-23, 25-16, DVA 15 Power Ginger 25-21, 25-11, Lakas 15 Power 25-15, 25-18 and Spark 15-1 Natalie 22-25, 27-25, 15-11.

“We lost the first set of the championship match but came back to win the second set 27-25, and then that gave us the momentum to win the last one 15-11,” Never Say Die 15s head coach Morgan Psalmonds said. “We worked so well as a team this weekend,” Psalmonds said. “Not only were they communicating before, but during and after when something didn’t go as planned. They were taking accountability and trusting one another.”

Kaylee Davis and Lily Hamel had 27 kills apiece during the tournament while Nya Martinez added another 23. Hamel also had a team-best 18 blocks while Davis added 10 more. Paelynn Beall led the team with 24 aces while Kiera Mick had 17.

Other team leaders were Mick with 43 digs, Gabby Keyes with 41, Beall with 35, Mia John with 29, Mali Rico with 27 and Addison Schaefers with 24. Beall also had a team-high 54 assists while Rico had 31.

“When doing stats this weekend, everyone had at least something next to their name,” Psalmonds said. “As a young team we focused on the three Cs … communicate, cover and celebrate. Not only did that live by it this weekend but they executed it as well.”

Added Psalmonds, “They are playing to their potential right now and it is making me excited to see what they can do for the next season. I am very proud of each and every one of them.”
