LAKE COUNTY >> The Never Say Die 17s club volleyball team went 1-3 at San Mateo on Saturday and 2-1 at Redwood City on Sunday during tournament action.
“The 17s have come a long way since the beginning of the season, mentally and physically,” NSD head coach Marci Psalmonds said. “They ended their season with two solid wins to win their consolation bracket. Everyone contributed in their own way. Defense was a huge highlight with 394 digs.”
Added Psalmonds, “Lindee Bingham and Kaylah Billig also rocked it at the net today (Sunday) with their 38 combined blocks. We were also solid at the line with 50 aces.”
During Saturday action at the San Mateo Event Center, NSD beat Elk Grove before losing to Samba (Grass Valley) and Enspire (Pleasant Hill).
During Sunday action at the Encore Sports Facility in Redwood City, NSD lost to Marin but rallied with wins over Prism (Ukiah) and Team Beasts (Humboldt).
“Ashlyn Wurm had the best all-around tourney with 51 kills, 60 digs, 21 aces and 42 assists,” Psalmonds said. “She pretty much had her hand on every play and was all over the court. Bella Patti had a strong performance, too, with 44 kills, 73 digs and five aces.”
Psalmonds also praised the defense of Atiana Patino, who finished with 139 digs and six aces.
Other team leaders were Aniya Jauregui with 75 assists and 44 digs, Bingham with 15 kills and 15 blocks, Billig with 23 kills and 12 blocks, Isa Barnes with 21 digs and five aces, and Aliyah Valdez with 45 digs.
“We worked smarter and discovered our true potential this weekend,” NSD coach Morgan Psalmonds said. “I’m very proud of how we played. We did have some ups and downs, but in the end, we learned from the downs and capitalized on our ups and the other team’s mistakes.”
