SANTA ROSA >> Middletown senior Hayden Xavier set another personal best and school record while winning the 200-meter race in 21.97 seconds Saturday during the Viking Invitational at Montgomery High School in Santa Rosa.

Xavier broke his previous best of 22.07 seconds. He also won the 100 meters in 10.95 seconds. Xavier has broken school records in the 100, 200 and 400 this season.

“He took home first-place medals for both the 100 and 200,” Middletown head coach Wyatt Hall said. “It was a little cold today, so personal records were a little harder to achieve, especially in the sprinting events.”

While Middletown took only a handful of athletes to the event, Hall said he was pleased with their performance.

“Esteban Muniz had a great day jumping,” Hall said. “He had his best triple jump of the season and had the best finish of my trio of long jumpers today.”

Muniz placed 14th in the triple jump at 35 feet, 2 ¾ inches. He also tied for 17th place out of 57 jumps in the long jump at 18-6.

Dylan Caviness cleared 10-6 in the pole vault to finish sixth.

“Avery Peterson and Charlize Hill both had big improvements on the track,” Hall said. “The two freshmen both had nine-second personal records today (Peterson in the 800 and Hill in the 1,600).”

Peterson placed 14th out of 41 runners in the 800 at 2 minutes, 36.36 seconds while Hill took 26th out of 55 runners in the 1,600 at 5:55.09.

“Trinity Wood (pole vault) and Jaqui Nunez (shotput), both freshmen, also competed well today,” Hall said. “My group of freshmen girls is strong this year. I have high expectations for them this year and in the future.”

Wood cleared 7-0 in the pole vault while Nunez had a throw of 25-4 ½ in the shotput.
