Bears hand Middletown first loss of season, 4-1; Gozony struck out eight for Lucerne

LOWER LAKE >> The Obsidian Bears handed the Middletown Broncos their first loss of the season Wednesday, winning 4-1 in a middle school softball game at Lower Lake.
Obsidian pitching held Middletown to one hit, a single by Emmie Hernandez. The Bears took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first before the Broncos briefly tied it with a run in the top of the third. Obsidian went back in front 2-1 in the bottom of the third and added two insurance runs in the fourth.
Losing pitcher Peyton Beehler struck out nine and walked two while throwing a complete game for the Broncos (4-1 league, 6-1 overall).
Obsidian statistics were not reported.
Middletown returns to action Monday at home against Terrace at 4:30 p.m.
In other middle school softball action Wednesday:
Lucerne 6, Upper Lake 5
At Upper Lake, Lucerne pitcher Angelina Gozony struck out eight, including her 50th batter of the season, while walking none in a win over the Upper Lake Wildcats.
“Our pitcher Angelina Gozony was throwing heat today,” Lucerne head coach Fred Miller said.
Monique Gozony went 2-for-3 for Lucerne and Sophie Basurto (1-for-2) knocked in two runs. Chevelle Sprague doubled while Angelina Gozony and Ally Abreu also had hits.
Upper Lake statistics were not reported.
Lucerne (2-3, 4-3) hosts Obsidian on Monday at 4:30 p.m.
