WILLITS >> With a chance to shake up his lineup, Middletown High School tennis head coach Tony Hart did exactly that Tuesday afternoon as the Mustangs defeated a young and rebuilding Willits squad 5-0 in Coastal Mountain Conference North action at Willits.
Hart gave his top two singles players, Will Hoskins and Harrison Brown, the day off. Their replacements did just fine as Leland Pike stepped into Hoskins’ No. 1 singles spot and beat Karina Velazco 6-0, 6-1 while Nalu Johnson moved into Brown’s No. 2 singles slot and beat Yamile Vicyra 6-0, 6-0.
“Leland got back into the saddle after Fort Bragg and played well,” Hart said. “Nalu played his first singles match and also had a strong match that helped with his confidence.”
Anthony Lopez beat Lissbeth Hernandez 6-0, 6-0 in third singles.
In doubles action, Koa Johnson and Brady Perreault won 6-0, 6-1 in first doubles while Siobhan Ryan and Grace Williams rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 win in second doubles.
“Brady and Koa continue to get better and played well,” Hart said. “Grace also played her first match and had some good ground strokes and served really well. Siobhan also used her experience to put some points away, and they cruised to their first win.”
Middletown is 6-1 in conference play. The Mustangs head to Boonville on Thursday to play Anderson Valley at 4 p.m.
