LAKEPORT >> The under-10 Lake County Lakers club basketball team went 1-1 and placed second Saturday during the Westshore Youth Basketball All-Star Tournament in Lakeport.
The Lakers fell 24-7 in the championship game to the Westshore All-Star team, which outscored the Lakers 17-0 in the second half, snapping a 7-7 halftime tie.
“Their offense was difficult to slow down,” Lakers head coach Richard Tucker said. “The switch to zone slowed them down a little bit and allowed us to protect the paint (in the first half).”
The Lakers beat Bloodline from Coyote Valley 18-14 in overtime to reach the finals. D’Angelo Negrete knocked down a free throw in the finals seconds of regulation to send the game into overtime.
“As a team we played great defense in both games,” Tucker said. “Elijah Tucker, a second-grader, held it down on defense, collecting a handful of steals. On offense he was aggressive, got to the free-throw line and had a fastbreak layup. Isaiah Dominguez played aggressively at both ends of the court, looking for his teammates down the court. Dominguez also attacked the boards to collect rebounds over some much bigger opponents. His passion to win is contagious.”
Elijah Tucker was named to the All-Tournament team.
