MIDDLETOWN >> Kelseyville High School scored twice in the top of the seventh inning to snap a 6-6 tie and beat Middletown 8-6 in junior varsity baseball action Tuesday afternoon in Middletown, the North Central League I opener for both teams.
“It was a hard-fought game,” Kelseyville head coach Sean Navarro said. “Middletown battled the entire time. The lead changed a few times, but we were able to pull the win at the end.”
Kelseyville scored three times in the top of the sixth to erase a 5-3 Middletown lead, but the Mustangs countered with a run in the bottom half to tie the score at 6-all.
Bradyn Ponce, the third of three Kelseyville pitchers, earned the win in relief. Jayden Fabisch went 2-for-2 with a double, Fabian Flores went 2-for-2, and Tyson Smith 2-for-3 with two runs scored for the Knights (1-0 league, 1-1 overall).
Benjamin Pimentel took the loss in relief for Middletown (0-1, 0-2).
John Bostow went 2-for-3 with a RBI for the Mustangs and Kolton Costlow went 2-for-3 with a triple. Colton Karp had a double.
“We had several mental mistakes,” Navarro said. “We were lucky to be able to still get the win. We cannot make these mistakes and hope to win games.”
The same two teams square off again Friday in Kelseyville at 4 p.m.
“I know it will be another tough game,” Navarro said.
