ELK GROVE >> Middletown’s fourth-grade traveling girls basketball team won the championship Sunday at the Yellow Jackets Battle in the Capital Tournament in Elk Grove.
Middletown, coached by Cody Smith and Dustin Fults, beat the Modesto Flight 20-6 in its first game behind eight points from Kinsley Lewis and six more from Hayden Smith. Facing the NorCal Bears in the championship game, Middletown won 17-11 as Lewis scored five points while Natalie Del Sarto and Kenlee Fults each had four.
“This team came out firing on all cylinders today and it all started on the defensive end,” Smith said. “The energy and hustle they played with today was something I have never seen from this group before, against much bigger and older teams. Our physicality, speed and teamwork was fun to watch. I’m very proud of this team.”
Added Smith, “This same group of girls have been working very hard together since the second grade to get to this point and the team chemistry and teamwork these girls play with is really starting to show.”
Middletown returns to action Saturday at the Lake County All-Stars Tournament in Lakeport.
