WINDSOR >> Kelseyville High School’s boys volleyball team ran into a wall of big schools Saturday during the Windsor Invitational at Windsor High School.
The young Knights (6-9) dropped all four of their matches, but there were some bright spots, according to head coach Kc White.
“A tale of two teams today,” White said. “The two matches we played in the morning were, for the most part, competitive. We pushed Windsor in the first set before falling apart in the second. Silver Creek was the top finisher in our group, and we fought hard against them, too, including a big run in the second set that brought us close before they pulled away.”
Windsor beat Kelseyville 25-23, 25-4 while Silver Creek defeated the Knights 25-19, 25-16. Pinole Valley handed Kelseyville a final loss in group play, 25-17, 25-13. In their final match, the Knights won their first set against St. Mary’s, 25-20, before dropping the next two sets 25-21 and 15-7.
“W got out of group play and played St. Mary’s in the afternoon,” White said. “We won the first set, but man, the team was so out of it. You would have thought we didn’t score a point with how they were reacting. We fought hard in the second set, but our serving crumbled in the final set. Our own mistakes cost us the match.”
Andon Beall’s 19 kills, 17 digs and six blocks led the Knights. Diego Rico finished the tournament with 22 assists, 19 digs, five kills and two aces while George Cline had 41 digs. Other leaders were Diego Serrato with five kills and four aces, and Julio Lopez with 17 digs, nine assists and four kills.
“Overall, I’m pleased with the fight we had in the morning,” White said. “Compared to our last tournament, we were much better from start to finish. We need to figure out how to avoid the lulls on long tournament days. Despite how the matches went earlier in the week, it was nice to see us push really good teams today.”
Kelseyville hits the road Thursday to play Will C. Wood in Vacaville at 6 p.m. On Friday, the Knights will be in the crowd when Stanford hosts No. 1 UCLA.
